In the lead-up to the festive season, Dunedin’s Araiteuru Marae will host a busy programme of events, emphasising community connection and manaakitanga (respect).

Chief among them will be the inaugural Pātaka Ora Summer Art Exhibition & Auction, to be held at the Shetland St marae next Monday, November 24, from 5pm-9pm.

Araiteuru Marae manager Tania Williams said the event aimed to honour local artists, while celebrating community and supporting the kaupapa of the the marae’s community wellbeing kitchen Pātaka Ora.

"So far this year, we have offered 18 Pātaka Ora meal services for our community — and we are hoping to raise some funds to help cover some of our costs," Ms Williams said.

"We are all very excited about hosting an exhibition of art from rangatahi to tohunga toi [experienced artists], enjoying music and kōrero and delicious kai."

The event, which is open to the whole community, will begin with a karakia, mihi and waiata; people will be able to come and go throughout the night.

The Pātaka Ora Summer Art Exhibition & Auction is being organised by the volunteer Pātaka Ora committee, which works tirelessly throughout the year to run the regular community meals.

Committee member Joe Yip, who co-ordinated the 100 volunteers involved in producing and hosting the Pātaka Ora meals, said the support of volunteers was vital to the programme.

"We are very lucky to have this amazing level of support from our volunteers, we couldn’t run Pātaka Ora without them," he said.

Committee member Greg Anderson said the exhibition would include paintings, ceramics, photography and more, there was even still time for artists to sign up via the Pātaka Ora Facebook page.

Artists will be able to drop off their works at the marae this Sunday, 11am-3pm.

The final two Pātaka Ora community meals will be held at lunchtime on Monday, December 1 and on December 8.

Ms Williams was hoping for good weather, so that community members could enjoy the outdoors at the marae, the pizza oven and a barbecue courtesy of Fulton Hogan.

All are welcome.

Whānau Hauora Day

On Saturday, Araiteuru Marae will host a Whānau Hauora Day from 10am-2pm, in conjunction with WellSouth, offering a broad range of free health checks and kōrero across about 30 stalls.

Ms Williams said the event would be a chance for whānau to come together, enjoy entertainment, kapa haka, food trucks and delicious kai, stalls and activities for children.

"This is more than just a fun day. This is a moment to pause, connect and uplift your whānau’s holistic wellbeing," she said.
