The bird won the Grand Champion Black Araucana award at the national Araucana exhibition, held in conjunction with the North Canterbury Poultry and Pigeon Club’s 127th annual winter show in Rangiora.
Ms Kalmakoff said she had been raising and exhibiting for almost 30 years and what got her into it was a fascination with Araucana hens’ blue-green coloured eggs.
"That got me started and I’ve been breeding and showing since the early ’90s," Ms Kalmakoff said.
"They are a nice gentle breed.
"I have always loved birds and over the years have had many different birds of all sizes and shapes."
