Opoho School pupils (from left) Chloe Xu (6), Niko Jimenez-Cunninghame (5) and Oscar Bunce (5) try on colourful wigs in preparation for Wig Wednesday.

The event, to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation, takes place on Wednesday, September 7.

Teacher Rachael McCaig said the whole school, including teachers, was taking part.

Pupils will have a parade on the day to enjoy all the wild and wonderful wigs and they will make a gold coin trail with money donated.

The event had particular significance for the school because two pupils in the past five years had been experiencing their own challenges with cancer, she said.

Child Cancer Foundation chief executive Monica Briggs said each week about three children were diagnosed with cancer nationally.

The foundation needed to raise $250,000 in urgent funds to provide essential support to tamariki with cancer and their whanau.

Many schools, workplaces and community groups had already signed up to get wiggy all over the country.

"We are so grateful for their dedication to raising money for these whanau during what is such a difficult time for so many Kiwis."
