Up to 240 people will gather at the swinging soiree during the weekend of June 16-18 for a retro revival rocking rendezvous.
Dunedin Rock’n’Roll Revival Club president and life member Margaret Cameron said the club started in 1983 as a result of putting a notice in the newspaper asking if people would be interested in forming a club.
Since the beginning the club had held events at South Dunedin Community Hall, which at the time was still called the town hall.
"We became part of the trust that owns the hall."
The club holds dance lessons every Monday night and a club night every Tuesday.
On the third Saturday of each month the club holds a dance.
"These are all open to the public."
Every February the club hosts the South Island Invitation Competitions, and members take part in national competitions which are hosted in a different location each year.
The club also hosts community events and dances in the Santa Parade.
"We play all sorts of music but you have got to be able to dance to it."
"We do try to stick to the rock’n’roll music, and of course we all like getting dressed up."
At 40 years old, the club was second only to the Wellington Rock’n’Roll Revival Club, which started in 1978.
The club attracted people of all ages, from members in their 80s to young people in their teens, and it was a very friendly atmosphere, Mrs Cameron said.
Events for the 40th anniversary included a get-together on the Friday night, a dance on Saturday and a breakfast on Sunday for visitors from across the country who were coming to share the celebrations.
The key to the club’s continued popularity was simple, Mrs Cameron said.
"The music, the music, the music."
