An American Flag Football tournament on Sunday was a chance to develop skills playing a fast-paced game that combines elements of touch rugby with American football or gridiron.

American Football Otago secretary and referee Mitchell Barnes said the non-contact sport used flags worn on a belt, and defenders had to "rip" a flag off a player instead of tackling.

Teams scored points by running the ball into the end zone.

"You just need to cross with the ball, you don’t need to put it down."

There was also a midway point.

"You’ve got three attempts to get to the midway point and three attempts to get to the other end."

It was similar to American football in that the ball was thrown or passed forward to players.

"You've got the same functions of like, people run up and you throw the ball forward."

Barnes said he really enjoyed American football.

"It is just super fun. There is a lot of different skills you can work on."

"You are out running, which is making sure you are running the right routes and making the right cuts."

Each position involved different skills to be thinking about, from rusher to wide receiver, to the quarterback.

"So you’ve got your quarterback who needs to perfect his throwing, his accuracy, his ability to throw on the run."

"You’ve also got to keep in mind like where people are going to be, because if your receivers are running you’ve got to throw the ball and it’s got to connect with them when they get to that spot."

Despite the club only being a few years old it had already participated in two national tournaments, and Barnes was keen to encourage more players to get involved.

"Then we’ll have a bigger pool of people to look to for nationals next year."

The winning team at the tournament was Joseph Cockburn, Padraig Reilly, Sam Donnelly and Bryce Allen.
