A firefighter extinguishes a smoking Volkswagen in Mornington yesterday afternoon.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) shift supervisor Brent Dunn said a crew from Dunedin Central Station were called about 1pm to extinguish the small fire in a car in Eglinton Rd.

The fire was not being treated as suspicious and no-one was injured, he said. A witness said smoke was billowing from the engine bay of the Volkswagen, but the car was at no point engulfed in flame. It appeared the car had been travelling uphill.
