Police are calling two motorists lucky after they walked away from open-road crashes on Thursday.
Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said a woman driver suffered a medical event on SH1 near Waimate and her car hit a concrete culvert.
The woman was checked by ambulance officers and found to have suffered no obvious injuries, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.
About 4.30pm a driver on Waihao Back Rd, Waimate, swerved to miss a cat, Sgt Reynolds said.
The car still hit the cat and the vehicle rolled into a ditch.
The woman driver escaped without injury; the cat was taken to a vet clinic but its condition was not known yesterday.
