Dunedin entrepreneur Hayden Breese believes the timing is ''perfect'' to launch a new product on the market allowing people to stand at their desks.

Mr Breese and fellow entrepreneurs Sean Ross, of Dunedin, and Dominic McKiernan, of Auckland, have formed Elevate Workstations Ltd with the aim of changing the way people work.

Elevate made it possible to use an existing desktop or table surface as a standing surface for a laptop and Mr Breese believed the market for the product was international.

''This could go very far,'' he said.

Elevate, which was manufactured in Auckland, came flat-packed and could be quickly assembled without tools.

The stand sloped on an angle away from the user and slotted into its base, stabilising the design and creating a sturdy structure for weight-bearing items such as laptops, keyboards and a mouse.

A Kickstarter funding campaign was under way and the men hoped to raise at least $20,000 by April 4 to boost production.

Mr Ross lived several doors away from MYTH, a digital and brand agency that Mr Breese founded.

He is its chief executive.

He was involved in IT and running a community website from his home and he sat down most of the time.

When he started having some issues with his back, he came up with a standing desk concept and started talking to Mr McKiernan, a designer.

Together they devised a product.

Mr Ross then introduced it to Mr Breese and gave him some prototypes, with the product tested at MYTH.

Other products on the market were often ''hashed together'' or were very bulky or cumbersome.

Elevate was a very modern accessory to add to the work environment, Mr Breese said.

''The way we work is changing. My young staff want to stand and have a flexible workplace and they want things to be different.

''I especially love that modern aesthetic as well. It's really great to have something functional and beautiful that you can use to help people stand up and be healthy. People don't want to be sitting down all the time.''

Mr Breese said internationally, there had been some ''pretty alarming statistics'' and research on sitting for prolonged periods.

He believed the timing was right for the company to launch.

People could pre-order through the Kickstarter campaign.

The company was 25% towards its $20,000 target and getting buyers worldwide.
