The Dunedin meat co-operative will source and process many of the Angus-breed cattle for the new Grand Angus and Mighty Angus burger range.
McDonald's estimates it will need an additional 500,000kg of beef to meet New Zealand demand for the burgers.
The cattle will come from farms independently verified as running Angus breed cattle.
McDonald's New Zealand managing director Mark Hawthorne said the new order would increase the company's annual purchase of New Zealand beef from 4.7 million kg to 5.2 million kg.
He said Angus was a premium grade of beef, known for its rich flavour.
Silver Fern Farms chief executive Keith Cooper said his company had created a supply chain for the cattle under its Backbone contract, in what he said was another example of the company's move to an integrated supply chain and away from spot purchasing of prime animals.
"This is what we mean by an integrated supply chain, where you have growers growing product to the customer's orders and specifications," he said.
