ANZ bank has closed its North Dunedin branch due to declining transactions in favour of its central city premises on the same street.

The bank closed its doors at 300 George St for good on November 22, but its ATM that accepts cash and cheque deposits will remain at the site.

All of the staff from the North Dunedin branch have taken up positions at other ANZ sites around Dunedin.

The bank has another branch on the corner of George St and Moray Pl, next to the Dunedin City Library.

‘‘The Dunedin branch is less than five minutes’ walk from the North Dunedin branch,’’ said Ben Kelleher, ANZ’s acting director of retail and business banking.

‘‘ANZ North Dunedin has seen transactions decline 17% over the past year,’’ the ANZ executive said.

Mr Kelleher said customers were far more likely to use online banking than visit a branch.

‘‘Today, the average ANZ customer uses mobile banking one to two times a day, and visits a branch only one to two times a year.

‘‘Only 1% of transactions that involve the movement of funds (deposits, withdrawals, transfers and automatic payments) are now made in branches, compared to 43% in 2012.’’

‘‘For those customers who don’t know how to use internet banking, or have any banking questions, staff at the ANZ Dunedin branch, which is just 400m down the road, are happy to help,’’ Mr Kelleher said.
