The annual presentation of certificates to new members of the Institute of Accountants in Dunedin this week had a distinctive local theme running through the evening.

The welcome was given by Otago branch chairman Michael Turner, a tax partner with Polson Higgs, the national presidential address was given by Graham Crombie, an audit partner with the same firm, the guest speaker was Ray Polson, a naming partner of the firm and an early mentor of Mr Crombie, and Mr Crombie presented a 50-year membership certificate to Les Stewart, a founding partner of Polson Higgs.

Also, two young members of Polson Higgs received their new member certificates.

Mr Crombie is the president in the institute's centennial year. The institute's first president 100 years ago was Peter Barr.

"It was a very good night. It was feeling extra special being the president in the centennial year because a lot of talent had gone before me.

"But presenting the certificates to the kids coming through was really cool," he said in an interview.

There was a lot of hard work in the seven years it took to become a chartered accountant.

Sixty-year membership certificates were presented to Jim Valentine and Erena McGilvary.

New chartered accountants presented with their membership certificates were: Fiona Bell, Richard Bone, Tania Crossan, Callum Hayde, Mistelle Jack, Amanda Leeden, Za'en Mazlan, Shaun McNamara, Darryl Putt, Miranda Richardson, Jiahua Su, Amy-Jane Taylor.

Associate chartered accountants presented with their membership certificates were: Jonathan Bredin, Megan Carey, Benjamin Eatwell.
