Port Otago's dredge New Era leaves the upper harbour in tranquil conditions yesterday morning, headed for Port Chalmers.

The New Era has spent several weeks high and dry on the Kitchener St slipway, where it has undergone regular maintenance and checks.

Port Otago plans to dredge 7.2 million cu m of sand, silt and clay from the lower harbour channel, from Port Chalmers to almost Taiaroa Head, and is awaiting release of the findings from its recent resource consent application.

Port Otago wants to dredge the channel for larger ships in three stages, using the suction hopper New Era and its separate floating grab crane Vulcan initially. A larger dredge may be contracted in later during the project.
