Several helicopters and fire crews have been battling a large wildfire in North Canterbury on Monday afternoon.

Fire and Emergency NZ personnel were called to the vegetation blaze on Karaka Rd, south of the Hurunui River, at 12.48pm.

A Fenz spokesperson said the fire covers about 100ha of a rural property.

Three helicopters and firefighters from the Culverden, Waikari, Hawarden, Hurunui, Waiau, and Rangiora stations were at the scene.

Fenz said some of the terrain was too rough for ground operations.

A police spokesperson said they were aware of the incident but had not been required at this stage.

Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said it appears to be a large grass fire.

She was not aware of housing or buildings at risk from the fire.

“This is something we will continue to be mindful of as we head into the summer months.”
