Two new picnic tables overlooking Lake Janet on Mt Grey (Maukatere) have given members of the Rangiora Tramping Club a lasting way to pay tribute to the late Rod Thomson and celebrate the club's 50th anniversary.
On a beautiful sunny day on September 12, around 40 people gathered beside the lake for the official unveiling of the tables, which replace ageing seating in the popular picnic area.
Club president Josh Van Eeden welcomed those attending, including members of the family of late club member Mr Thomson, whose generous bequest helped fund the project. Among those present were Rod's daughter Sarah Rodie, his sister Lill Thomson, partner Matthew, and granddaughters Sylvie, Bailey and Layla Munro.
The new tables are both a practical improvement for visitors to the lake and a tribute to Rod's contribution to the club. Club members were delighted to use his bequest to create a lasting legacy, while also commemorating the club's half-century milestone.
Josh officially opened the tables by pulling one end of a ribbon, while Rod's granddaughters held the other, marking the moment the new seating was declared ready for use.
The club also acknowledged the volunteers who have spent years clearing and maintaining the area, managing predator traps, and helping organise and install the tables.
Following the ceremony, attendees celebrated with a picnic of sandwiches and slices before taking a walk around the tarn and enjoying the opportunity to share stories in the now beautifully restored setting.
The Rangiora Tramping Club also thanked Matariki Forests for opening Cramptons Bush Road to allow access for the special occasion.
