Cr Vandervis: "[The written apology] should have been the end of it, but an opportunity was then...
Cr Lee Vandervis
Residential development of the future could be off the grid, Dunedin city councillor Lee Vandervis says.

Improvements had been made in water storage and properties might not need council infrastructure for power and sewerage, he said.

"There are major opportunities with new technology, beyond the grid."

However, the city’s district plan was zone-based, rather than needs-based, potentially getting in the way, he said.

Mayor Aaron Hawkins dismissed this as a "survivalist fantasy".

Such ideas tended to be promoted by land-supply libertarians who believed in being allowed to do whatever they liked on their land, he said.

Development still put pressure on the overall system.

mmmm hardly good comments from someone who ran under a green banner. "survivalist" odd words to use when the country is going through a housing crisis and a pandemic.

Oh boy, that's rich, coming from the mayor of a city of debt burdened citizens 'surviving' power failures, sewage leaks, flooding...
I would have thought a 'green' thinking mayor would encourage a new generation of self-sufficient, personally responsible 'land owners' who choose to lessen their impact on the planet and encourage sustainable alternatives to modern problems.
Oh, but that would lessen the rates take, wouldn't it?
Councils do nothing more than increase costs, taking control away from those who FUND them. And this council can't even manage the basic needs of the city.
