CD Reviews: Lee Ranaldo and the Dust

The ''other half'' of Sonic Youth, guitarist/vocalist Lee Ranaldo and drummer Steve Shelley, are unquestionably top players.

Together with Alan Licht (guitar) and Tim Luntzel, they create vast expanses of freeform acoustic/electric guitar-rock that can leave you spinning.

But there's a sense here that Ranaldo believes cobbling together all the set moves he has learned deliver him a coherent and focused album, and he's wrong.

Still turning in some entry-level lyrics, and overworking a tendency to take a tune in all possible directions, he undoes much of his own excellent work.

  • Lee Ranaldo and the Dust. Last Night On Earth. Matador Records.
  • 3 stars out of 5
