CD Reviews: Paolo Nutini

Paolo Nutini's third album, the follow-up to 2009's Sunny Side Up and 2006 debut These Streets might be darker and grittier than its predecessors, but those depths also provide a joyous exploration of soul that highlights the full range of the Scotsman's vocal talents.

Though there is the occasional instance of overblown production (the massed choir of One Day distracts attention from the key melody), Nutini's songs are well served by a dexterous horn section (Numpty) and a fluid, funky rhythm section that pushes and pulls against staccato organ and textural loops.
