CD reviews: The Prettiots

Boasting a name perfectly in synch with its sardonic, faux-naive lyricism, New York band The Prettiots might include ukuleles among the instrumental inventory, yet the light, poppish approach does little to diminish the dark, pulsing heart of this album.

"On a scale of one to Plath I'm like a four/my head's not in the oven, but I can't get off the floor,'' Kay Kasparhauser sings on Suicide Hotline, just one of the dozen tracks she and Lulu Prat have, seemingly, effortlessly whipped off on this debut album.

The pair even do a cover of The Misfits Skulls, which is more taut than twee.
