
The 25-strong South African cast hasturned The Civic into Rydell High School for the musical which opened last night and is set to run until August 29.
Grease features 142 costume changes, 16 leather jackets, 59 wigs, 10 jumbo cans of hairspray. and eight pots of gel.
Director David Gilmore said "Grease" gives a flavour of being a teenager in the 50s.
"It was a time when rock 'n' roll and putting grease on your hair were the most important things in life and this is the level that we should take it on," Gilmore said.
Set in 1959 at Rydell High School, "Grease" has maintained appeal, with songs like "Greased Lightnin'", "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee", "Hopelessly Devoted To You", "Summer Nights", "Sandy" and "You're the One That I Want".
