Refuel manager Scott Muir says in the five years during which the dunedinmusic.com website has been up and running, it has made a positive contribution to the local music scene.

"It has created a focus for musicians and lovers of Dunedin music. We believe more of a sense of community exists because of this.

"It has definitely provided a platform for many Dunedin artists."

The fifth birthday party of the website dedicated to all things Dunedin music is at ReFuel today.

It has caused both pleasure and pain for Mr Muir.

"A lot of work in preparation, a palpable sense of achievement, and a day and night of amazing Dunedin music."

There are more bands than one can shake a sound engineer at, but Scott Muir believes everything should run smoothly, providing everyone communicates well.

"It's all about stage management. Everyone playing has to be aware of how long their set is and when they need to be on-stage and off-stage.

Most of that is just a matter of preparation, and working with great people."

In some music scenes there are clashes of personality - historically, Auckland has been a hotbed for this.

According to Mr Muir it is not a problem in Dunedin.

"No, not at all really, everyone is enthusiastic and pitching in. The goodwill involved in putting 24 acts on in one day is tremendous."

He expects the website to grow steadily over time.

"We're rolling out services in new areas so you'll see the business move into the space that you might associate with software-as-a-service businesses, operating within the new music management space.

"Beyond that we hope to solidify our core services, which are basically advocacy services for musicians and the business of building industry infrastructure.

"The industry is changing rapidly and our music services business is ideally placed to respond to and build on these changes."

Scott Muir says the five-year milestone is just that, and there's much more life in the web yet.

"While it's great to hit five, we are consistently looking forward to 10 and beyond."
