Liam Finn and Op Shop have been chosen for the second year running as finalists for the Australasian Performing Right Association's (Apra) songwriting award.

Finn gets the nomination for his single Gather to the Chapel, while the hit song One Day did the same for Op Shop (Jason Kerrison, Bobby Kennedy, Matt Treacy and Clinton Harris).

The other three finalist songs are Dreams In My Head by Anika Moa, Bright Grey by the Phoenix Foundation (Samuel Scott, Luke Buda, Tom Wedde, William Ricketts, Richard Singleton and Warner Emery), and Baby Come On for Elemeno P's Dave Gibson and Justyn Pilbrow.

The finalists, who are chosen by their peers, will also have their works performed by their peers.

Unique renditions of each song will be performed at the invite only Apra Silver Scroll awards at Auckland Town Hall on September 10.

Apra's director of New Zealand operations Anthony Healey said the award was the Ranfurly Shield of the music industry.

"These five songs absolutely do it justice, but only one though gets to hold the Scroll for the next 12 months," he said.

Another New Zealand Music Hall of Fame inductee will be announced at the event and there will be an award for the most performed work in New Zealand.

There will also be awards for contemporary Maori, and contemporary classical music.

Brooke Fraser won last year's Silver Scroll with her song Albertine, while Jordan Luck was the country's inaugural hall of fame inductee.
