A slew of Dunedin acts will pay tribute to our city’s musical culture next Saturday, covering songs from local artists past and present in the sixth annual Dunedin Music Circle Jerk at Re:Fuel.

Over the course of the evening, nine Dunedin bands will exclusively cover other Dunedin music, everything ranging from familiar classics to infamous one-off YouTube hits in what is always a surprisingly eclectic range of choices and unique interpretations.

Performers this year include the vibrant sanctuary folk of Tahu and the Takahes, the powerful acoustic soul of Abby Wolfe, the looped hyperdub reggae roots of Oleh and the alternative psych pop of the High Twitch Athletic Club.

DEBUT MIX TAPE

Vincent Quattro, Dunedin’s own ‘‘bad boi @ the bottom of the map’’, is putting out his first mix tape this week, on the back of his debut single Do A Skid.

IT’S MY PARTY

Dunedin alternative funk/rock trio the Vortz is having a party to celebrate the release of its debut EP Eclectic Electric this week at Re:Fuel.

The trio of Boaz Anema (vocals/guitar), Peter Mathieson (drums) and David Jackson (bass) first appeared in May with the release of Funk It, the band’s slinky debut single.

Think Supergroove, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and tie-dye.

Support comes from Tom Batchelor’s River Jesters and doom gaze metal outfit Boognish.

IT CAME FROM ...

There are also a couple of excellent new additions to Dunedin’s "It Came From Bandcamp" folder this week.

Firstly, Dunedin pop-surf four-piece Hermann Doose has released the first taste from its forthcoming EP entitled Beach Wolf, recorded by Thundercub’s Samdrub Dawa.

It’s a sunny and chill little song called Southerners, with some reverb-drenched ’50s guitar lines and crashing wave rhythm complementing vocalist/guitarist Brad McDonald’s drawl of a West Coast vocal.

Dunedin house production outfit Sandboards has also added some fire to its growing dance-floor flame with the release of Duneboys Theme.

Built around an absolutely thumping kick drum, clapping hi-hats and a pulsing four-note bassline, the silky track does all its damage with catchy vocal cut-ups and buyout chords.

The Duneboys Theme single is complemented by the gorgeous soulful B-side cut Sandboard Dream (69 Club Mix) and a washed-out remix of the Duneboys Theme from New Zealand dance leader and artist k2k.

The single is available through Margins, a Wellington dance and electro label, which continues to solidify its position as this country’s home for on-point underground house and techno.
