The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says the actor cut his hand when he broke a window and fled the home.
The Sheriff's Department says an electrical malfunction caused the fire. The fired destroyed the home and caused an estimated $US3.5 million ($NZ5.66 million) damage.
A call and e-mail to Nolte's publicist Arnold Robinson were not immediately returned.
