Crowe is currently working on the biblical blockbuster Noah in the United States while Spencer is in Sydney with the couple's two sons.
News Ltd says it's understood the split is amicable and the couple's main concern is to protect their two sons Charles, eight, and Tennyson, six, from the public spotlight.
The couple, who first met 22 years ago on the set of the film The Crossing, were married in a chapel at Crowe's farm near Coffs Harbour in 2003.
