United Machinists
From local job shop to global component supplier
From their base in Dunedin, United Machinists produces more than 10,000 components for space and advanced aviation each year, 50,000 prosthetic and surgical instruments, and another 30,000 complex parts for mission-critical industries. Much of their work is down to tolerances as low as 5 micron (to put in context 1/10th of a human hair!).
Over the past five years they’ve transformed from local job shop, to global mission critical component supplier – shifting from 34% of their business being from Otago and surrounds, to now only 1.7% and more than doubling in revenue overall, much of their growth has come from the Australian market.
Many parts of their operation now run 24 hours 7 days a week, due to fully automated machines and robotics. They have also this year developed a state of the art anodising and quality lab, with New Zealand’s first Hexagon S Scan CMM (±0.0005 mm), which is already attracting work nationally in metrology services.
A key differentiator for United are their people. They’ve redefined the traditional machinist role by developing a team of Technical Leaders – trade and tertiary-qualified engineers who can quote, design, prototype, and automate production.
United also run an Engineering Cadetship with Otago Polytechnic and engage in internships and projects with Auckland, Otago, and Canterbury Universities, ensuring a strong pipeline of advanced manufacturing talent.

Setting the standard for craftsmanship, service, innovation, and excellence
Design Windows Central Otago is a locally owned manufacturer based in Cromwell, supplying premium APL window and AGP glazing solutions for residential, commercial, and architectural projects. Founded in 2006 by John and Carmen Hancock, the company has grown from five staff to over 60, thriving as part of a network of independently owned South Island branches.
