Nestled in the heart of Musselburgh, tucked away behind the bright orange door, is a funky boutique hair salon, Verge Hairdressing. This month, Sally and Sonya Clark, sisters and co-owners of Verge, celebrate 25 years in business.
Sally opened her salon, Sally Jane’s Hair Shoppe, on Musselburgh Rise in 1991, where she employed her younger sister, Sonya, as an apprentice. Ten years after opening, Sally and Sonya decided to officially go into business together, after Sonya returned from working in the UK and Australia, and so in 2001 they moved the salon across the road and rebranded as Verge Hairdressing.
Client Catherine Sheehan, from Waikouaiti, is happy to travel 30 minutes to see her favourite stylists. ‘‘When I came back from Australia in 2005 I needed a hairdresser, so I asked around and people recommended Verge. It’s a friendly and welcoming environment with great parking and coffee".
Catherine isn’t the only client to travel a great distance, with other clients travelling from as far as Wanaka, Queenstown and Kurow to take advantage of the salon’s exceptional services.
Aside from offering a full range of hairdressing services, specialising in beautiful blondes and balayage, Verge provides delicious Allpress coffee and fantastic parking. They also offer make-up services, and sell a selection of their favourite beauty products, including Li Lash, Fab Brow and Inika make-up. As a Wella Gold salon, they offer a selection of Wella haircare products, as well as Sebastian, SP Luxe, GHD, Fudge and specialist hair-loss formula Nioxin.
The sisters’ shared love for hairdressing has allowed their business to steadily grow over the years. They have created a strong team of diverse stylists, but one thing the staff at Verge are all passionate about is ensuring that their clients look and feel fabulous.
Many of them have had significant experience overseas and bring a wealth of talent and enthusiasm for hairstyling and fashion. The training and further development of the future generation of stylists is important to Sally and Sonya, so they take on apprentices whenever possible and are proud to say they have supported and trained eight over the years.
