From the South to ... anywhere, really. In a brief series, we track down people who were raised or educated here and are now doing something interesting overseas. Today, we feature former North Otago woman Rebecca Clayton, who is a key figure in marketing for a company in England. Hayden Meikle tracks her down for a chat.

Q. Where do you live?

Putney, in London. I’ve been in London for 16 years, Putney for 13. London is busy, fun, close to Europe, on the river Thames and great for families. And we always have visitors from New Zealand.

Q. What do you do for a job?

I head up global marketing for a financial intelligence business.

Q. What is the appeal of your job?

A fascinating industry, a growing company scaling up, learning more about marketing globally.

Q. Career or life highlight? Events that shaped your life?

After a good start to my career in New Zealand, I moved to London. I have been able to work in global roles since, serving clients in lots of different industries. Our parents raised us to believe we could do anything (or at least try anything). I am now a mum of two boys and the UK workplace in general is amazingly supportive and flexible so I can be involved in their lives.

Q. Outside work, what do you like to do?

We are big on travelling and keeping fit. I am part of a fantastic book club (15 years!).

Q. Favourite country visited?

Too hard. I love coming back to New Zealand but I also really enjoy Scotland (especially Orkney), Switzerland, Italy and France.

Q. Where are you from originally?

I was born in Twizel. We moved to beautiful Kakanui when I was 6, and I stayed there through school, including St Kevin’s in Oamaru. Four years at Otago then went to Wellington.

Q. What are your favourite memories of growing up or studying/working here?

The beach in Kakanui is awesome. Otago for uni was fun and a bit crazy — but I finally did get into the studying bit. Wellington was great for my first job and it is a gorgeous city surrounded by the harbour. Lots of beach times, walks and met lifelong friends.

Q. Where will you be in five years?

Probably in London, getting our boys through high school!
