Man superglues hands to table in court

A man who superglued his hands to the bar table in a Brisbane courtroom has been charged with contempt.

Marcus Anthony Burke was in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday to face a charge of impersonating an authorised fire services officer.

Burke told media outside court after he had been released from the table that he wanted his case to be heard in a federal court.

It is understood he was arrested last year while wearing his State Emergency Services uniform at an Extinction Rebellion protest.

Burke said he was heartbroken at no longer being allowed to volunteer for the SES after 10 years as a member.

"I love the SES," he said.

"I love the people. If I can't do what I am trained to do, then I am just going to keep protesting against the government until we get some action."

In court, Burke approached the bar table but was asked by the magistrate to allow another matter to be heard first.

When asked to move away from the table, Burke told the court he was "locked on".

It soon became obvious his hands were stuck to the table, with police finding a tube of superglue.

He apologised to the magistrate numerous times, saying he "had absolutely no other choice".

"Resistance is a duty when injustice becomes law," Burke said.

Police officers carrying solvent arrived at the closed court while security officers guarded the door to the room.

About two hours after Burke stuck himself to the table, he appeared before the magistrate on a contempt charge.

A duty lawyer told the magistrate Burke was not in a state where she could take instructions from him.

The magistrate said it had been "an eventful morning" and she had concerns about his mental health.

Burke was bailed to appear in court on the contempt charge on March 26.

He is expected to appear on the impersonation charge on March 25.
