Port Otago’s backhoe dredge Takutai was towed quietly up the Otago Harbour this week by its tug Arihi after undergoing its five-year out-of-water survey at Lyttelton.
That involved its hull, machinery and safety equipment being assessed by registered ship surveyors to ensure it was fit for purpose and met safety standards. Its underwater surface areas were also repainted.
It took 42.5 hours to slowly make its way back to Port Otago while the tug’s crew spent their time spotting whales. They also saw Hector’s dolphins near Lyttelton.
Takutai will be back out in the harbour dredging early next month
