$5 million development for former tannery site

Port Otago will redevelop the former Glendermid Leathers tannery site at Sawyers Bay, remediating the existing contaminated site and creating a storage and distribution warehouse for port-related activities.

The $5 million development will start within the next two months, commercial manager Peter Brown says.

The development will also include realignment of State Highway 88, Sir John Thorn Dr, to give better sightlines for vehicles leaving the site.

Some established silver birch trees will be removed from the road frontage with the new landscaped bund planted in low-growing native shrubs.

Sawyers Bay residents were to receive letters at the weekend announcing the development.

Low levels of existing site contaminants were present on the site as a result of previous use.

They would be managed during the construction phase, Mr Brown said.

In 2009, an Otago Regional Council report said the Glendermid Leathers tannery at Sawyers Bay was found to be contaminated, with elevated metal levels detected in soil samples.

There were two distinct stages of the planned development, Mr Brown said.

The earthworks component involved clearing vegetation, capping topsoil, importing gravel for pavements, cut to fill on-site and the creation of landscaping bunds.

No soil would leave the site.

The final development would be hard surfaced with either concrete slabs or asphalt.

The warehouse, at the rear of the site, was a permitted activity and would be about 85m wide and 47.5m deep and have a maximum height of 10m.

It would be used to store food-grade products and related packing.

Up to 20 truck movements a day - in and out - would occur when the development was fully operational.
