The days of the old schoolyard were remembered in Brockville at the weekend.

More than 100 former pupils and teachers from as far afield as Australia attended the three-day 50th reunion of the Brockville Full Primary School and bilingual unit.

A group of 40 former pupils and teachers reminisced in the school hall yesterday, where a photographic timeline charted the school's evolution since its opening in 1962.

"All six of us went through this school and it was a fantastic place to grow up.

"It was a fantastic school, with great teachers and lots of great mates," Bryce Adie said.

Messages of congratulation were received from former pupils, including United States-based softball pitcher Peter Meredith, and former Straitjacket Fits singer-songwriter Shayne Carter, from Auckland.

A commemorative post marking the 50th anniversary was later unveiled at the school entrance.

Principal Chris Cumberland, who started at the school two weeks ago, said he was moved by the community's togetherness and passion.

"The sense of community is amazing up here. Brockville has a very special feeling."

The reunion finished yesterday afternoon with a hangi.
