From a meeting at a regular dance group to 65 years of marriage, Trevor and Joan Berry have never looked back.

"As long as I do what I'm told,'' Mr Berry quipped.

Mr and Mrs Berry (nee Rasmussen) were regulars at the Miss Wallace School of Dancing near the Exchange in Dunedin in the late 1940s, and it was not long before they caught each other's eyes.

"She just attracted me,'' Mr Berry said.

"I can't put it down to exactly what it was.''

The couple continued to attend the dances together, as well as at the Dunedin Town Hall, and were married at Holy Cross church in Dunedin in 1951 - 65 years ago today.

The couple raised three children - Christine (62), Alistair, who died at the age of 24, and Kathryn (52), who was adopted when she was 4 days old.

They have three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr Berry grew up in St Clair but was later forced to relocate, he said.

"We lost our home, which Dad built, through the Depression, and moved to Andersons Bay.''

He attended St Clair and Andersons Bay primary schools and later King Edward Technical College. Mr Berry worked for S. M. Brown Print of Princes St and The Evening Star, before managing the printing division at the DIC department store until it was bought by Arthur Barnett in the 1980s.

He finished his career working for National Insurance.

Mrs Berry grew up in St Kilda and attended Musselburgh Primary School and later Brown's Commercial College.

They had lived in Macandrew Bay since they wed in 1951, Mr Berry said.

Both enjoyed being involved in the community, Mrs Berry playing keyboards for people at rest-homes until recently.

Tonight, they will celebrate their anniversary over dinner with family and friends at the Mornington Tavern.
