New Zealand’s best Highland dancers shone in Dunedin at the Piping & Dancing Association of New Zealand Otago Centre’s 111th annual championships at the weekend.

Piping & Dancing Association of New Zealand Otago Centre president Shiobhan Smith said about 200 competitors put their best foot forward at dancing events, held at the College of Education Auditorium, in Union St East, and piping, at John McGlashan College, in
Pilkington St, from Saturday to yesterday.

There were "a lot of kilts" at the annual championships, which this year included the 18-and-over New Zealand championships for
Highland dancing, and the open solo piping championships, she said.

"It was amazing — the whole weekend went really, really well," she said.

"We had the top pipers and dancers from New Zealand come to Dunedin and it couldn’t have gone better."

Otago Daily Times photographer Stephen Jaquiery took in the 18-and-over Irish jig competition yesterday.
