DJ Wilson (11), of Dunedin, watches in amazement as his shoe explodes during Chuck Jones' magic act at the Lions Club Magic Show in the Regent Theatre on Thursday night.

The show followed a similar one held earlier in the afternoon. Together, the shows attracted more than 2000 disadvantaged children, children with disabilities and their carers.

Organising committee chairman Ron Coles said it was the 25th year the Lions Dunedin Central and Host clubs had staged the event, which was aimed at providing a bit of pre-Christmas cheer for those less fortunate.

He said funds raised from the event would be given to the Otago region of Brain Injury New Zealand and the Otago Youth Adventure Trust.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
