Haunting tones and ghastly smells filled experimental sound artist and instrument-maker Alastair Galbraith's studio on Friday, when he demonstrated his fire organ.

With him is Mick Elborado, of Dunedin, who controls the flow of gas to the organ.

The demonstration constituted a workshop as part of the 2016 academy for the Australia and New Zealand College of Organists.

Mr Galbraith also demonstrated the use of a glass harmonica that he had made.

The artist said he had travelled to Christchurch and Nelson with the organ, and even sent it up to Auckland once, by plane.

But, in general, he does not like travelling with it, he said.

Transporting such a complex object was tricky.

"I don't like to move it much.''
