Airport parks expanding to meet numbers

Record numbers at Dunedin Airport mean the facility’s car park is being expanded.

Work is under way at the northeast end of the car park, where airport marketing and communications manager Megan Crawford said there would soon be another 283 public car parks. That development was a result of the recent increase in capacity at the airport, and the resulting increase in passengers. The work was scheduled to be completed by the middle of June, she said. The airport had one million passengers through its gates in one year for the first time in February.

December had been the busiest month to date, with 84,914 passengers, but Ms Crawford said last month had beaten that, with numbers up due to Easter and the Ed Sheeran concert.

The record numbers are mostly from an increase in domestic capacity, including a new Jetstar Dunedin to Wellington service introduced in 2015, and last year’s decision by Air New Zealand to add an extra 30,000 annual seats to its Dunedin to Wellington capacity. Ms Crawford said the airport had at times had to park up to 100 vehicles outside the car park area.

The project was good for the public as the airport wanted to provide "ease of travel",  and there would be added revenue from parking fees.

There would be no change to those fees, she said.

A sign that business must be very healthy at Dunedin airport.

Yes, it was nice not to be notified inside when trying to exit from the car park at 12am when arriving back from Brisbane.
The last thing folk needed after a late flight.
thanks

Interesting, airport parking does get busier but I always find a free spot whenever I fly. As for those 100 cars parked outside, most of them just try to save some money. Airport doesn't take any liability for any damage to a car so why pay $52 for 3 days with the same level of car security if one can just walk an extra hundred meters.
