Choppers take to the skies

The skies over Dunedin were buzzing yesterday with a showcase of one Australasia’s finest rescue helicopter fleets.

Helicopters Otago rescue helicopters took to the air for a photo shoot ahead of a conference in Germany where the fleet will be broadcast to the entire world.

Chief executive Graeme Gale said the company had one of the most "modern up-to-date" fleets of Airbus H145s in Australasia that provided emergency medical services.

It would be good to be able to showcase to colleagues in Europe what it was doing in New Zealand, he said.

"We’ve got quite a comprehensive fleet of [emergency medical service] machines, the largest in the country, and we really want to capture that while we’ve got an opportunity to get them all on film."

Helicopters Otago had three H145s, and had more on the way.

They were the best available on the market and were also the world’s most sought-after model, Mr Gale said.

The waitlist for purchase was about three and a-half years.

"We’re very fortunate to have a significant fleet of them, it is a big deal for New Zealand — they’ve got capabilities that I probably dreamt of 10 years ago."

That meant the service could get to more patients, provide more care faster and get them to hospital faster than ever, Mr Gale said.

"It’s quieter operating in and out around the cities. It’s a safer helicopter than what we’ve used in the past ... it’s a new generation helicopter, they are a very big deal."

Helicopters Otago operates the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter service from its base at Taieri Airfield. It also has a satellite base in Queenstown.
