Rabbits, cats and dogs, including a Great Dane which towered over many of the young parishioners, were blessed by the Dean, the Very Reverend Trevor James, at the service, which was attended by about 30 people.
Rivalries between species were cast aside during the service to mark the feast of St Francis, the patron saint of animals, with only the occasional bark audible over the hymns and readings.
Dr James said donations collected at the service, which had run for about 12 years, were given to the Dunedin branch of the SPCA.
"We do this every year because we think the work of the SPCA, and the way we treat our animals, is utterly critical for society.
"In fact, it is animals that teach us how to be human.’’SPCA Otago executive officer Sophie McSkimming said it was always nice to have animals blessed.
"It is always a lovely day.
"We would like to thank the cathedral for putting it on because it is a real help."
Among those to be blessed was Great Dane Spook (7 months).
Spook’s owner, Colleen Symon, said her giant pooch seemed to have enjoyed the service, but was not so sure about the organ.
She planned to bring the dog along next year.
At the end of the service parishioners were invited to light a candle for deceased pets, and their furry companions were offered a meaty treat on their way out.
