Arrest made over attempted burglaries

Police have arrested a man in relation to several recent attempted burglaries in Dunedin.

Police say the man entered a house in Grange St, North Dunedin, where two people were sleeping about 5am last Thursday, but did not take anything.

The following night, about 10.30pm, he is believed to have tried to break into several houses in Hyde St and was scared away after a person spotted him.

While the man did not go into any houses, he was seen looking in windows and was unlawfully on property, police said.

The same night, a man was seen loitering in the same area. Police spoke to him and took a detailed description.

Officers then conducted inquiries and looked at CCTV footage to establish if he was the same man who had been trying to break into houses.

After confirming this, they arrested the man on Monday.

The 31-year-old  was due to appear this Friday on charges of burglary and unlawfully being in an enclosed yard.

Police believe he may be responsible for similar incidents in the area and want people who saw anything suspicious to come forward.
