Those involved in fighting the Wenita forest fire, which affected 200ha at Mt Allan, will this week begin to assess the cost and success of the operation.
Three firefighters were still patrolling the fire but no further hotspots had broken out, Dunedin City Council principal rural fire officer Graeme Still said yesterday.
They would patrol for another few days and then the situation would be reassessed.
Mr Still and Wenita staff would start assessing the cost of the fire this week.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
Mr Still said he was happy with the operation.
''Flying conditions were not good. There were big winds up there, 60kmh and gusting higher than that.''
The quick response from all those involved, from the digger and tanker drivers to the helicopter pilots and firefighters who worked on Christmas Day, was ''humbling'', he said.
''It was really outstanding.''
Rain in the past week and that expected today was helping to keep the area dampened down so any outbreak would ''not go anywhere'', Mr Still said.
