Eight months' work that included input from about 90 people resulted in a performance that packed the College of Education auditorium in Dunedin on Saturday for a night of Malaysian culture.

The Otago Malaysian Students' Association's cultural night, Malam Malaysia, attracted more than 450 people to what has become a full theatre production.

Director Jeffrey Ong modestly described the result as ''quite enjoyable for most of the audience''.

This year's show, set in 1970s Malaysia, followed the journey of three people with a passion for music and a dream of winning a talent quest.

Mr Ong said organisers started auditions in January and preparation for the event in March.

The show was the biggest event of the association's year.

Mr Ong said it was his first year as director.

He had been involved in the show for its five year existence, beginning as a lighting technician before playing in the band, performing as a singer, ''slowly taking different parts in the production'' then taking over as director.
