The Good Company Arts production After Durer won the prize for most innovative work at the Festival Internazionale di Videodanza in Naples, Italy, at the weekend.
"We're absolutely over the moon," Belton said after receiving the news from Italy yesterday afternoon.
"This is the biggest prize we've won and it was up against the top dance people in Europe."
More than 120 works, from 30 countries, were submitted.
After Durer was produced by Belton and his wife, Donnine Harrison, with music by Martin Lodge.
The eight-minute film was something of a family affair, with Belton's father, Peter, and brother, Simon, responsible for the cinematography.
It explores maths, music and alchemy in an interpretation of German artist Albrecht Durer's 1514 print Melencolia.
Durer (1471-1528) was a painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg, who is regarded as one of Northern Europe's greatest Renaissance artists.
Belton was unsure what Good Company Arts would receive for the win, but said it would give his company priceless international exposure.
"We're hoping there's a big trophy and a few euros involved, but we don't know yet."
After Durer had its world premiere at the Christchurch Body Festival in October and was nominated as one of New Zealand Listener magazine's best dance films of 2007.
A free public screening of After Durer will be held at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on October 25.
