Benefits of safety-rated cars highlighted in display

Dunedin shoppers are to be confronted with the smashed remnants from car crash tests, as part of a New Zealand Transport Agency initiative to highlight the benefits of safety-rated vehicles.

The display of two safety-rated cars and the contrasting levels of damage wrought on their twisted metal in crash tests is to be based in the Meridian mall, from Friday.

NZTA chief executive Geoff Dangerfield said the display had been brought from Australia to highlight the differences safety-rated cars made to passengers in crash simulations.

Choosing safer vehicles was a simple way that individual drivers could reduce deaths and injuries by keeping themselves and their families safer on the roads, he said.

"If all New Zealanders drove five-star safety rated cars, it's estimated the road toll could be reduced by one-third.

"Based on the latest annual road toll, that is nearly 100 people whose lives would not have been lost last year alone," Mr Dangerfield said.

The display, in the Meridian from Friday until Sunday, is being hosted in conjunction with Dunedin road safety partners, the Dunedin City Council, police and ACC.
