Bike day out

Gearing up for a social bike ride on a  spring morning yesterday are recent emigrants from Wales (from left) Lyra (5), Torin (7), Kate and Fraser Stephens.

The social ride, organised by cycling advocacy group Spokes, took about a dozen participants on a guided tour of Dunedin’s cycling infrastructure, from the Dunedin  Railway Station to St Kilda Dinosaur Park and back.

Keen rider Fraser Stephens, who moved to Dunedin with his family from Abergavenny in Wales two months ago, said he was convinced cycleways were the "killer feature" that will get more people on their bikes.

"Not teaching cyclists to avoid cars, or hi-vis jackets, or helmets — the thing that gets people cycling is the ability to cycle from A to B safely."

Dr Stephens was diplomatic when quizzed on the city’s cycleways.

"I think it’s a work in progress, and I reserve judgement until it’s done."

About a dozen!
Does that mean it could have been less than a dozen?
On an organised ride put together by the group that fleeced us into spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for their pet crusade.
Thanks Dave, less than impressive!
