A blue and gold start to 2024

The weather was mixed across the South for partygoers seeing in the new year, but thousands flocked to the events on offer.

In Dunedin, crowds gathered in the Octagon.

A laser show in the city a year ago was panned by critics, but this year’s light show received a better reception on social media.

Comments said it was impressive and safer and better than fireworks.

However, the lack of fireworks was still lamented by some residents.

In Queenstown people flocked to the waterfront to soak up the sun and the relaxed atmosphere on the last afternoon of 2023.

Food stalls, buskers and live music were on offer and pubs were packed along the waterfront.

In Wānaka, lakefront bars were full of people seeing off the final sunset of the year, while in Dungarvon St, hundreds waited with varying levels of patience for buses that would transport them to Rhythm & Alps in the Cardrona Valley.

Both Invercargill and Oamaru pressed on with celebrations amid difficult weather.

It had been hoped rain might lift in Invercargill before its event.

Jamm Events and Entertainment company director Melwin Mathew said, given the weather, he was pleased with how many people showed up at the New Year’s Eve party in Don St.

"The rain didn’t stop as many people as I thought it would."

Invercargill Licensing Trust chief executive Chris Ramsay said he was happy with the crowds across all the ILT sites.

"People were in good spirits and enjoying their New Year celebrations, from the Newfield to Waxy’s," he said.

"Lots of people were making a night of it, enjoying a meal, checking out the street party and having fun with their friends."

Despite the rain, a hearty crowd turned up to the public garden in Oamaru to bring in the new year.

Tipi tents protected partygoers from the weather.
