Scott Bezett was not too worried when he heard an "almighty crack" above his car as he waited for the traffic lights to change at  Queens Gardens in Dunedin yesterday.

He was in  Cumberland St, waiting to turn right to head towards the Exchange about 6.30pm.

"I was sitting at the lights and I heard this almighty crack."

There was already a fair bit of debris about from the trees on a blustery evening, and he did not think too much of it.

But a couple of seconds later, he had plenty to think about.

"It felt like half a tree on top of me.

"It all just came down in a big heap, just a big branch on top of the car, and then I wasn’t really sure what to do after that."

Mr Bezett said once he got his wits about him, he managed to back the car out from under the branch.

"I was a bit shaken for a wee bit afterwards.

"I was more surprised than anything."

His car was still driveable, despite being ‘‘a bit dinged up’’.

That damage was mostly in the form of scratches to the paintwork, though the roof was dented and "compressed down", making the doors tight.

Mr Bezett said he was insured.
