A new community mural and celebrations to mark its completion lit up Kirriemuir Park, in Maryhill, Dunedin, yesterday.

Project co-ordinator Harriet Toa said Dunedin artist Claire Rye had created the mural — showing a stream, trees, colourful birds and youngsters at play — and 20 youngsters had helped complete the work.

The work, on an external garage wall by the park, was done over several recent weekends, and Iona Stewart, a second-year art student at Otago Polytechnic, had worked on side panels by the mural.

"We have had a lovely response from the community and really enjoyed neighbours connecting with neighbours," she said.

London-born Ms Rye said everyone did a "great job" and she was "really happy".

Mrs Toa is also the senior Dunedin local area co-ordinator for AccessAbilities, a support organisation for people with disabilities.

"This really has been a wonderful journey, bringing the community together, where people have pitched in — grandparents and parents too, not just the kids — brought food to sustain us, and enjoyed the company of others in the community," she said.

"For me it’s been about making sure people are connected, especially for those who are confined to their home or isolated in their community," she said.

When her mother Jessie Sutton bought a house beside the park, near Kirriemuir St, three years ago, she wanted to have the garage’s large yellow side wall painted.

Ms Sutton said the wall was "a fantastic place to have a community mural" and she was "absolutely delighted".
