Students compete in the annual ''Gladstone Rd Gutbuster'' in North Dunedin last night.

Aquinas College deputy head Steve Downey said about 70 first-year students raced 400m from the Glencairn St and Gladstone Rd intersection to the University of Otago residential college at the top of Gladstone Rd.

College residents had run the same course for the past 47 years, Mr Downey said.

College duty manager Brian Satake said the race was a form of ''stress release'' designed to give the residents an active break from exam study.
