A car on fire blocked a lane of traffic in central Dunedin this morning.

A police spokeswoman said the car on fire was parked on the side of Stuart St, east of the Highgate overbridge.

Police were called about 8.30am for traffic control as one lane was blocked due to the fire.

The cause of the fire was unknown but it was not being treated as suspicious.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said crews from two stations - Lookout Point and Dunedin City - attended.

The car was on fire when the first crew arrived, she said.
