Waitati School pupils (from left) Millie Field (12), Sylvia Baeumer (11) and Tamsin Norrish (12) plant a tree on former forestry land near Walton Park, Fairfield, as part of an Enviroschools event yesterday.

Enviroschools organiser Daniel Jephson said year 7-10 pupils from Waitati School, Dunedin North Intermediate, Columba College, Kavanagh College and Taieri College spent the morning in the Downes Room at Mosgiel Library, working with outreach educators from the Otago Museum, the University of Otago physics department and Enviroschools facilitators, looking at the effect humans have had on climate change.

They also conducted experiments into ocean acidification and explored the carbon cycle.

The group planted trees in Fairfield to offset carbon emissions, before Dunedin city councillor David Benson-Pope met them to speak about Dunedin's goal of becoming carbon-zero by 2050.
